Introduction to Slitting Lines
A slitting line will create multiple widths or "mults" from a wider master coil. The mults are made from predetermined widths. The slitter consists of three main parts: an uncoiler, slitter, and recoiler. The material is fed from the uncoiler, through the nip between the two circular cutting wheels (one on top and another underneath), and then re-wound in slit mults on the recoiler. The slitting process has been referred to as part art and part science. It is important that the equipment supplier and end user work in concert so the proper components, arbor size, tooling package, horsepower and tensions are suitable for the material to be slit.
The heavy gauge slitting line is a specialized machine used in industrial settings for cutting large coils of metal into narrower strips. It is commonly used in industries such as steel manufacturing, automotive, construction, and packaging.

Slitting Process Explained
Slitting is a sheet metal cutting process with circular knives, which is used to split wide coiled sheet metal into narrower widths or for edge trimming of rolled sheet. The slitter knives are mounted on two arbors together with spacers . The spacers determine the width of the cut and the horizontal clear- ance. Sometimes also a vertical clearance (overlap, Appendix A) is used, e.g. to correct for bending of the arbors. Rubber stripper rings are used to eject the strip from between the knives and to support the strip during slitting. A slitting line consists of an uncoiler, a slitter and a recoiler. The uncoiler, slitter and recoiler are driven by separate motors. Depending on the way the uncoiler, slitter and recoiler are driven, different modes to drive the material through the slitter knives can be distinguished. Which mode is chosen depends on the material, the sheet thickness and the number of slits.

Straight Mode Slitting
In this mode the driven recoiler pulls the material from the uncoiler through the slit- ters. It is called pull-through slitting, when the uncoiler and slitter are driven only to feed the material to the recoiler. In driven slitting the slitter is also driven during the process. The motors must now be synchronised to maintain a constant speed of the material as it moves through the line. The advantages of driven slitting are the ability to slit thin sheets and an improved edge quality for all thicknesses.
Free Loop Mode Slitting
In free loop slitting, the material is allowed to form a free loop between the slitter and the recoiler. A tensioning device in front of the recoiler is needed now, to produce well wound coils. This method makes it possible to process poorly shaped coils. Shape defects (length variations such as buckles, twists and thickness variation across the width) and internal stresses in the incoming coil influence the result of the slitting process. Therefore, a leveller or a temper mill can be added to the slitting line, to correct defects in the incoming coil, which ensures a better quality of the slitted strips.

Functions of Several Main Components in the Slitting Line
Uncoilers and Feeders
Uncoilers are sometimes referred to as decoilers. It usually works with a coil feeder to insert sheet metal into a slitter. An uncoiler, as the name suggests, unwinds sheet metal from a coil car and feeds it to a coil feeder. The coil feeder is used to flatten the main coil and ensure that the sheet is fed evenly into the slitter. In some coil slitting lines, the uncoiler and coil feeder are integrated in one machine. In this case, a sheet flattening attachment is equipped to replace the coil feeder.
Sheet Slitting Machine
The slitter is the main component in the slitting line that performs the actual slitting task. The slitting machine consists of rollers, slide rails, specification adjustment, and knife pairs. Parts and accessories may vary depending on the model of the slitter, but will require knife setting and adjustment. Knife pairs cut sheet metal into narrower multi-knives. Most slitters use roller blades to cut sheets. The number of mults determines the tool pairs set up on the machine. The gauge adjustment, or adjusting the slider, controls the width of the muls coming out of the machine. The gauge adjustment also determines the width of the main coil that the slitter handles. In a highly automated slitting line, all these adjustments are controlled by a computer control unit. The operator arranges adjustments manually using a light and simple slitter. The sheet slitting machine is crucial in a slitting line, not only because it can slit the coil, but also control the quality of the result. One of the problems that occurs during the slitting process is the rough edges of the multi-knives. A rough edge occurs when the knife pair is not set correctly or the blade becomes dull. To avoid such problems, insert clearance and adjustment tolerances should be pre-checked before each production. The muls enter the press cut after being cut.
Press Cutting Machine
A press cutter is a machine that cuts muls into desired lengths. This is where the fixed-length part comes in. Although usually driven by a press, cutters can be operated using other types of power sources. Although the cutter usually follows the slitter on the coil slitting line, in rare cases it may precede the cutter. In modern slitting lines, it is common to combine cutters with slitting machines. Integrate multiple workstations into one, reducing work cycles and workspace.
Coiler
The winder collects and winds multiple rolls of film at the end of the slitting line. The setting of the winder should be synchronized with the slitter for good winding. Coilers are important in specific slitting processes where long strips are produced. However, in most cases it is excluded from slitting lines. Since the multiple cutters produced by small workshops or most slitting lines are rather short, no winders are used. After the muls are backflushed, they are packaged and sent to the end line for processing.
There are significant benefits to incorporating slitting machinery in your manufacturing or pre-manufacturing processes, including:
Cost Savings
Slitting is far faster and cheaper per pound versus cutting sheets or alternate saw methods requiring extensive labor, time, and blade costs.
Customization
Precision rotary slitters produce coils in specialized widths tailored to customers' roll forming and component size needs.
Finish Quality
Clean, smooth, razor-cut edges prevent distortion or saw teeth marks, permitting thinner gauges and improved corrosion resistance.
Efficiency
The slitting machine can cut the coiled material efficiently and improve production efficiency. They typically feature fast cutting speeds and automated features that allow for continuous shearing operations, reducing downtime during production.
Accuracy
The slitting machine uses an advanced control system and precision cutting tools to achieve high-precision cutting. This accuracy is important for products that require precise dimensions, such as sheet metal, paper, plastic film, etc.
Versatility
Slitting machines usually have multiple cutting modes and adjustable cutting parameters, which can adapt to the needs of different materials and different sizes. This makes slitting machines widely used in different industries, such as metal processing, printing and packaging, etc.
Automation Control
Modern slitting machines usually have advanced automation control systems that can realize automated cutting operations. This not only improves production efficiency, but also reduces operator labor intensity and the risk of human error.
Components of Slitting Machine
Slitting is performed on slitting lines which consist of four basic devices:
The uncoiler, or pay-off reel, which tightly grips the master coil on its inside diameter using an expandable mandrel. The coil is fed into the slitter by either rotating or jogging the mandrel.
The slitter, which consists of two parallel arbors mounted with rotary cutting knives. These knives partially penetrate the coil stock causing a crack or fracture on both sides of the stock, separating the material.
A tensioning device, which is placed between the slitter and the subsequent recoiler. A tensioning device is needed because the master coil is crowned or larger in diameter in the center of its width than at the edges. Without a tensioning device the slit material from the center of the master coil would take up more quickly while the outboard strips would hang loosely.
The recoiler, which takes up the slit coils on a driven, expandable mandrel. The recoiler mandrel is fitted with separator discs which prevent interleaving of the narrower coil widths.
Other slitting line equipment can include:
• Scrap disposal machinery
• Edge conditioning equipment
• Packaging devices
Choosing the Right Provider for Slitting Lines
Most metal service providers offer slitting services, but that's not to say all of them are created equal. Before you make a decision, consider the following factors. Making the wrong choice can lead to costly errors and delays.
Expertise and Experience
Assess their experience, technical expertise, and knowledge of different slitting techniques. A reputable provider will have a skilled team capable of handling diverse metal types, thicknesses, and sizes.
Range of Services
A comprehensive range of services will cater to your needs better than jumping from provider to provider. Ensure they can perform various techniques required for your products, such as recoiling, cut-to-length, or deburring.
Quality Assurance
A reliable service provider will have stringent quality assurance processes to ensure consistent and accurate edge conditioning results. They should adhere to industry standards and conduct thorough inspections to maintain high-quality standards.
Common Problem of Slitting Lines
Q: What is the process of slitting?
The technique of thinning is the process of cutting a large roll of material into smaller strips. To accomplish this, either unwind the parent roll with a bladed knifeholder or laser and cut it into smaller pieces, or slit the roll and unwind without unwinding. Slitting is commonly used in the cutting of paper, vinyl, thin plastics, and other soft, pliable materials. Slavering is accomplished by placing a razor blade (or a series of razor blades) on a slitting machine and slicing the material into desired widths. Converting very thin films is best done with razor-slit substrates. Sleeving, scoring, and crush slit is accomplished by moving an substrate between two rotating anvils and a rotating knife or series of knives.
The two types of machines have a significant difference in the cutting method. A cut to length machine makes a series of incisions with a blade that moves back and forth. Machineries like this are more effective for thick materials that are difficult to break. The only difference is that a slitting machine has a single blade that moves up and down, making narrower cuts. This type of machine is better suited to materials that are fragile.
